How can a strange or absurd situation spark the imagination and an interest in one’s surroundings?

Where does the breakdown of established systems allow for the growth of new ones?

“Conversations that matter” can take place anywhere: between friends, colleagues, even complete strangers. The conversation can be as fleeting as a mutual observation while waiting for the bus, or a lengthy discussion about making changes in our lifestyle, school, community, workplace, society, and the world. Through these conversations, we create a connection with others.

I host monthly conversation ’salons’ to help make sense of our place in the world - locally, nationally, and globally. Each month sees a different topic. Each salon lasts two hours.

During Conversations That Matter, we acknowledge one another as equals, and that everyone speaks from their own perspective. Everyone comes to a salon willing to listen, and to be curious about the diversity of experiences and ideas. We are intrigued by the differences we hear, we expect to be surprised, and we treasure curiosity more than certainty. We ask “what’s possible?” not “what’s wrong?” It’s not unusual to discover that creative solutions come from new connections or that listening without judgment moves us closer to each other.

There is no charge, although a $5 donation to cover admin costs and facilitator’s time is appreciated; you won’t be turned away for lack of funds.

Artist Statement;
Through random circumstance some years ago, I found myself in relationships with Filipiino or Pinay (the Tagalog term) cam girls alone in their rooms some 6500 miles away. Over time their lives and images combined with those of local people and graffiti to become the focus of this project.
Themes of distant emptiness, longing and survival naturally course through many of the images here, often with some Seattle graffiti overlaid on top.
All flashes of color came about from natural malfunctions in a very stressed printer. The images are collage on wood under epoxy resin with steel closet supports as the frames.
I have been doing art in Seattle for 15 years, used to live in SE Asia and in the recent past ran ERAC Galleria, an art collective for homeless/mentally ill in Belltown.

Obi has a rich collector base in the Northwest and because of it, the new work will be offered at Collector’s only prices. The engagement will coincide with Seattle’s Belltown Art Walk that occurs every third Thursday of the Month.

This is Obi’s second trip to Seattle to show at Bedlam. The first happened in November of 2009 and the paintings sold out. So come and and bring a beer and check out the work.

Obi’s paintings reflect a style he calls “Gothic Nouveau”. A dark style of neutral colors that invoke Romantic poetry and figurative expressionism. Raw and sprited, the work has been called by the SFChronicle “an apt mix of illustration and street art.” Obi would add Cave Art to that formula.

http://obikaufmann.wordpress.com/

–UPDATE
if you missed Obi, you missed big time…it was another complete sell out, every single piece he brought up flew out the door. Course that meant nothing was left on the walls at Bedlam, so I gathered up most of my Obi pieces from home and brought them down. So if you missed his show, you can still “see” some of his stuff here. None of which is for sale.
